When you’re a carer yourself, sometimes it’s hard to find the time and energy to look after yourself properly. It’s important to look after yourself so you can do the things you enjoy and carry on caring.
Sleep and eat well
It can be difficult, but it’s important to eat healthy and stay active. It’s also a top priority to get enough sleep.
Ask for help
It can sometimes feel as though you need to do everything yourself. This isn’t the case. If you have relative nearby, try to be honest if you’re struggling. They may lend a hand or help take some responsibilities from you. As a carer, you’re entitled to a carer’s assessment from your local counsel. This can help you find external support for in your role as a carer.
Respite care means taking a break from caring, while someone else looks after the person you care for. This means you can have some time for yourself to rest and recharge. You can find out about our respite care packages here.
Time for yourself
It’s important you find time for yourself and something you find enjoyable or relaxing. Something like an exercise group or evening class can be helpful.
Taking part in an activity you enjoy gives you the chance to do something for yourself. It’s important to keep your own interests and hobbies and pursue them where you can.
If this isn’t an option, it’s equally important to take 10 minutes for yourself when you can for a cup of tea or some fresh air.
Speak to your GP
If you’re struggling with providing care, it can help to speak to your GP and tell them you’re a carer. If it’s impacting your own health, they can offer advice and support. You may also be entitled to additional health services, such as a free annual flu jab.
