Dementia Friends is a programme ran by the Alzheimer’s Society. It’s the biggest ever initiative to try and change peoples views about dementia. Its aim is to change the way people think, act and talk about the condition.

What is a Dementia Friend?

A Dementia Friend is someone who learns about dementia. This means they can help their community. Too many people affected by dementia feel let down by society. This is because of a lack of understanding around the condition. Dementia Friends aims to raise awareness and understanding surrounding the condition. This means that people living with dementia can continue to live the way they want.

What does a Dementia Friend do?

Firstly, Dementia Friends help people living with dementia. They do this by taking action – both big and small. It doesn’t have to be anything time consuming. You can help by just visiting someone you know with dementia or being more patient in a shop queue. Finally, Dementia Friends can also get involved with things like: volunteering, campaigning or wearing a badge to raise awareness.

What are we doing to help?

We are taking steps in the Dementia Friends Programme Partnerships scheme. This means we’re taking steps towards becoming a dementia friendly organisation. We’re wanting to get as many staff as possible through their Dementia Friends training. This means we can do our part as a company and spread awareness of dementia.

Its Dementia Action Week this week and we’re posting tips and advice across our social media and website – find out tips and advice such as our plans for the week or dementia friendly online activities.
